Sergeant John Gerard Coughlin
John Coughlin, a big, burly NYPD sergeant and ex-U.S. Marine, had one especially memorable trait -- a heart of gold, especially for children. That tenderness was most evident with his own three daughters. He took them parasailing, river rafting and to amusement parks. He even took them to watch their favorite baseball team, the Yankees, although he himself was a diehard Mets fan.
Sergeant Coughlin showed his tender heart in countless other ways ... as a volunteer firefighter in the town where he lived ... serving as an honor guard at the funerals of former Marines ... and giving up a week's vacation each year to work on the Marines' Toys for Tots program. "He was a firm believer that every kid should have a toy for Christmas," recalls his wife.
He was also a firm believer in doing his duty to serve and protect, even when that duty might cost him his own life . . . as it did on September 11, 2001.
