Officer George Howard
September 11, 2001, wasn't the first time George Howard rushed to work on his day off. He did the same thing in 1993 after the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. He won a medal for his heroism that day, leading many people to safety ... including an elevator packed with children.
Officer Howard dedicated his life to saving the lives of others. He volunteered with the local fire department where he lived, trained other police and fire departments, and was a founding member of the Port Authority's elite emergency services unit.
Soon after 9/11, President Bush addressed the nation before a joint session of Congress. Holding up a police badge he said, "[This] is my reminder of lives that ended and a task that does not end." The badge was Officer Howard's, a gift from his mother. George Howard was also survived by two teenage sons, the eldest already determined to follow his father's heroic footsteps into law enforcement.
