The Character
Harold Crick, a leading character in the movie Stranger than Fiction, lives with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and is ruled by his wristwatch. He spends his life living his days just as he did all the ones before. Working for the IRS, Harold finds that the only things that really changes in his life is the person or business he audits from day to day. One day, he hears a woman's voice narrating what he is doing, as well as what he is thinking. He soon realizes that he is the only one who can hear her, and that she, unfortunately, cannot hear him.

One morning, he finds himself at a bus stop, with a wristwatch that has just stopped working. He resets the time according to something a stranger tells hims. He hears the narrator once again, but this time she reveals that he will now face his imminent death because of the simple time change on his wristwatch that will now rule his life.

Harold is assigned to audit a baker, Ana Pascal, who purposefully avoids paying her taxes. When he goes to her shop, he finds himself attracted to her, and in turn, her unorganized way of life. When he finishes auditing her late one night, she bakes him cookies, and convinces him to eat them. As he reluctantly does so, she tells him about how she used to be enrolled at Harvard Law School, and during late night study sessions with classmates, she realized that the baking goods she brought made them happy and relaxed. She dropped out to open her own bakery and never turned back. As Harold enjoys his cookies, he realizes that everyone has a different position in the world, but that everyone makes a difference in the lives of others. He offers to pay for the remaining cookies on his plate which offends Ana, who then asks Harold to go home.

However, Harold wasn't going to let Ana go, because he knew that she could change his life. He apologized with a dozen flours, and the two began a loving relationship that helped Harold to break out of his shell, and his O.C.D. ways.

Soon, Harold, who continues to hear the woman narrating his life, seeks the advice of a professor at the nearby university. Through his help, he learns that the woman is actually Karen Eiffel, a well-known author, who is suffering from writer's block. After she has exhausted all her ideas for a way to kill Harold Crick, the main character in her new novel, she finally discovered one that fit just right.

Karen and the real Harold meet, and she gives him the manuscript for her new novel. He reads through it in one sitting, and realizes that there is no other way for Harold Crick to die that would be as meaningful and powerful. He returns the manuscript, spends an evening with Ana in which he tells her how much he cares for her, and wakes up the next morning, prepared for what's about to happen.

He starts his day out just like any other, with a green apple in one hand and walking briskly to the bus stop. However, today was different, and he knew it. He saved the life of a little boy, and was willing to give up his own.

However, at the last minute, Karen Eiffel had a change of heart, and decided to save the life of Harold Crick. How could she end a person's life who was willing to give it up just to save someone else.

Harold the Hero
Harold is a hero not only because he was willing to give his own life to save another, but because he was willing to change. He lived with a disorder that can rule a person's life, but was able to get around it with the help of someone who truly loved him. He realized the goodness in those around him and the things they did. And lastly, he accepted the beauty in living in a selfless way and the amount of change that can happen in the world, when you're willing to change yourself.

I really loved the underlying theme in this movie. I didn't really expect to like it as much I did.

Harold was a great heroic character. Didn't expect Will Ferrell to play that role so well, but I love when he learns to play guitar and the song he plays is awesome as well
