Princess Diana Spencer
Lady Diana, Princess of Wales
Lady Diana, or Lady Di as she was later commonly referred to, was born into an aristocratic family on July 1st, 1961, in Sandringham (Norfolk - England). Her parents were John Edward Spencer and Lady Frances Spencer. She had 3 siblings; 2 sisters (Sarah and Jane) and a brother (Charles).
Her and Prince Charles were married on July 29, 1981. Together, they had two children, Prinz William (Willie), 21st June 1982 and Prinz Henry (Harry), 15th September 1984. Unfortunately, their marriage was not a good one. Prince Charles admitted to having an affair and a year later, Lady Diana admitted to her own affair. When questioned about her marriage, she was quoted as saying "Well there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded." Their marriage was officially over August 28, 1996 and just one year later, Lady Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris.
During her lifetime, Lady Diana became one of the most well-known faces of the world, due in large part to her global humanitarian work. In 1990, People noted Lady Diana was patron to 44 charities. She didn't want to be just a name on a
letterhead... she wanted to do something for people. Her involvement included such things as homelessness, Aids, Leprosy as well as bombing and land mine victims.
Her charity work continued after her death. At the time of her death Princess Diana was the official patron of Royal Marsden NHS Trust (a cancer fund); Greater Ormond Street Children's Hospital, London; the National AIDS Trust (an umbrella group for a wide array of AIDS causes in the United Kingdom); The Leprosy Mission; the English National Ballet, and Centerpoint Soho (provides services to homeless youth). She was also closely associated with the British Red Cross Anti-Personnel Land Mines Campaign. After her death, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund was established.
There were important people who were related to Diana's charitable work:
Prince Charles: Her married status made her a celebrity and gave her the opportunities and media coverage to enable her to raise large amounts of money at charitable functions and raise public awareness about issues important to her. After their divorce, she was able to more fully participate and support political causes.
Nelson Mandela: The former South African president announced at a press conference in London on November 2, 2002 the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund would launch a joint initiative on AIDS in South Africa. He emphasized the important role Diana played in combating the stigma around AIDS/HIV.
Mother Theresa was a close friend of Lady Diana's. Diana's life, in many ways, paralleled Mother Theresa. Both where dedicated in their help of the poor and needy.
Even though Lady Diana's life ended tragically, and too soon, her charitable work continues today. She is an icon throughout the world and still recognized for the charitable work she's done. She is definitely a Hero of the 20th Century.
