"Whatever you do, don't come down here." Those were the last words Sonya Houston ever heard from her husband. He was calling on September 11th from his regular beat at the World Trade Center, just after the attacks had begun.

The stocky, nine-year veteran loved his current assignment, patrolling the halls and plazas of the massive complex. It was a long way up from the projects of Brooklyn where he had started in life. He worked hard back then, doing odd jobs to earn extra money, going on to college, getting married and becoming the proud father of two children. Now age 32, there was nothing he loved more than time with his family. Every day off was "family day."

He was previously assigned to Times Square, but now enjoyed being in a place where he could park his new SUV without worry. "[T]hat's the safest place in the city," he told his wife. But not on that day -- especially for heroes like Officer Houston.
