Captain Kathy Mazza
Kathy Mazza, 46, was already a life-saving hero long before 9/11. The former operating room nurse and wife of a NYPD officer switched to law enforcement in 1987. Her program to train over 600 Port Authority officers to use defibrillators was credited with saving as many as 16 lives in its first two years. Kathy's nursing skills were also known by neighbors, whom she treated for everything from cuts and scrapes to heart attacks!
Kathy rose quickly through the ranks, and became one of only two females among the Port Authority's 14 captains. On September 11, 2001, Kathy raced with colleagues from their Jersey City headquarters to the burning World Trade Center. Witnesses recall her leadership and initiative, including shooting out glass doors with her gun to create escape routes. Her body was found beside four fellow officers and a victim. All died after the evacuation order had been given, trying to rescue one last person.
