From boy genius to POW to walking weapon
Iron man, otherwise known as Tony Stark of Stark enterprises has gotten much attention since he was adopted for the big screen. Did you know that he first appearance was not in his own comic, but actually a Marvel series called Tales Of Suspense? My father actually once owned a copy of it but said that it was sold in a garage sale! Can you believe that I was once so close to owning a relic of those proportions?
To give you some background on this fascinating persona, take note of some of his accomplishments: at the age of 15 he entered MIT to join the electrical engineering program and graduated at the head of the class, and after an unfortunate vehicle accident, his parents passed away, leaving Stark Enterprises in his control at the tender age of 22. That’s quite a bit of responsibility for anyone! Luckily, Tony Stark isn’t just anyone; he was meant to be a superhero!
During the time of Vietnam Conflict, Stark Enterprises helped the war effort but Stark was attacked along with the factory he was visiting in Asia and was critically wounded and captured. With the help of, Ho Yinsen, a famed physicist and one of his biggest influences whom also happened to be captured, they together created a power suit that kept Tony alive by keeping shrapnel from reaching his heart. But the other function it had was to transform Stark into his alter ego, a one-man walking tank known as Iron Man. After breaking free of prison and unfortunately losing Yinsen in the process, Tony, as Iron Man dealt with his captors and avenged his colleague’s death and was able to return stateside.
After returning, Stark continued to modify the power suit to improve its functions and named Iron Man his personal bodyguard as to keep their identities separate to the public. In the meantime, Tony also became the corporate sponsor of the Avengers, a superhero group consisting of Iron Man (as Tony was the founder and financial backer of the group), Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp, and the Hulk. Their purpose was to minimize the threat of villains who threatened peace and security.
