On July 4, 1917, Steve Rogers was born in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. His parents were Irish immigrants, Sarah and Joseph Rogers. Rogers was a tall thin fine arts student in the early 1940’s. Prior to America’s entry into World War II and concerned about the Nazi rise to power in Germany, Rogers attempted to enlist in the U.S. Army. He was rejected due to his poor physical condition. A U.S. Army officer looking for test subjects offered Rogers an opportunity to serve his country by participating in a top-secret defense program…..Operation Rebirth. The new project was aimed at developing physically superior soldiers. Rogers volunteers and is ultimately selected as the first human test subject the Super-Soldier serum.

Rogers receives injections and oral ingestions of the Super-Soldier formula. He is given controlled bursts of ‘Vita Rays’ that activate and stabilize the serum. Rogers physically is altered almost instantly. His muscles and reflexes are enhanced to the point he is described as being a ‘nearly perfect human being.’ Rogers can bench press 1100 pounds and can run one mile in just over one minute. He developed a unique hand-to-hand combat style which earned him the title of one of the finest human combatants the world had ever known. He possessed an extremely high IQ.

Captain America and BuckyThe doctor who created the serum (Erskine) is killed by a Nazi spy. Because the scientist had committed the portions of the Super-Soldier formula to memory, it cannot be duplicated. The U.S. government attempts to make the most of its one super-soldier, re-imagines him as a superhero who serves as both a counter-intelligence agent and a propaganda symbol to counter Nazi Germany’s head of terror, the Red Skull. Rogers wears a uniform modeled after an American flag, a bulletproof shield, a side arm, and the codename Captain America. He is given a cover identity as a private in the infantry at Camp Lehigh, Virginia. While in the camp, Rogers becomes friends with James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes. Barnes discovers the dual identity of Rogers. Barnes agrees to keep it secret as long as he can become Captain America’s sidekick. Rogers agrees and trains Barnes. Rogers meets President Franklin D. Roosevelt and is presented a shield (12 pounds, impenetrable, indestructible, aerodynamic weapon) made out of Vibranium. Throughout Word War II Captain America and Bucky battle the Nazis on their own and as members of the Invaders later to become the All-Winners Squad.

In the latter days of World War II Captain America and Bucky attempt to stop the evil Baron Zemo from destroying an experimental drone plane. The plane was launched by Zemo loaded with explosives. As Captain America ad Bucky attempt to diffuse the bomb it explodes in mid-air. Bucky was presumed killed and Captain America was thrown into the freezing waters of the North Atlantic. Neither body is ever recovered.

Years later, the Avengers discover Roger’s body in the North Atlantic. He had been preserved in a block of ice since 1945 which melted after it had been thrown back into the ocean by Submariner. Captain America details his last failed mission and although he accepts membership in the Avengers he continues to be plagued by his inability to save Bucky’s life. Captain America does work for the national security agency S.H.I.E.L.D. which is operated by his old friend Nick Fury. Rogers moves into the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Rogers learns that Bucky has been held in suspended animation during the Cold War doing assassinations as the Winter Soldier.

The Death of Captain AmericaThings for Captain America became chaotic the passage of the Superhero Registration Act neared. Captain America became the de facto leader of the Secret Avengers, heroes fighting against the registration act. Civil War erupted between the opposing sides and a pitched battle was fought in New York. Captain America nearly delivered a death blow to his one time friend Iron Man. Captain America realizing the damage being done to the city and its people agreed to unmask and surrender as Steve Rogers.

On his way to arraignment at a Federal Court House in New York City, Captain America was shot in the back by a sniper. Several subsequent shots were fired into Rogers point blank by brainwashed Sharon Carter. Falcon and Winter Soldier subdued the sniper Crossbones. Captain America was pronounced dead upon his arrival to Mercy Hospital.

You know I never appreciated Cap as much as I did when fought against the Superhuman Registration Act, the event which Civil War is based around. Also, ever did I have such a distaste for Iron Man either. It wasn't your average clashing of good versus evil, this was a battle between two sides of the same coin and it was actually Captian America who had the foresight to surrender so that no more people would be harmed in the cause for his battle. Unfortunately there was another great casualty to be had; his own life would be lost during an assassination attempt as Cap was to be tried for the anti-registration movement. Captain America went down fighting the good fight.
