Mary Kay
Building an empire from Ash
There aren’t a lot of prominent ladies in the business world. Actually, this is part of the reason that Mary Kathlyn Wagner gave up the first time around. When she was working as a sales person in the 1930’s through the 60’s, she was very successful and taught several people the tricks of her trade. Unfortunately, she was overlooked for a promotion when it was actually given to a man that she had trained and in turn grew frustrated and retired. This, however, turned out to be a blessing in disguise since she started the very successful Mary Kay line of cosmetics, which began with a modest $5000 investment and single storefront and in less than twenty years blossomed beyond belief. In addition, Mary Kay began a charity for women facing the hardships of domestic abuse and gender specific illnesses. Although she passed away in 1996, her legacy lives on through her brand today.
